Final Version

This is the final version of the music magazine....

Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The convention used in my magazine, have shown similar features to the rolling stone front cover of Kanye West and 50 Cent. My product was based around that idea and therefore fits the Hip-Hop feel I was looking for. The contents page also consists of the same of the same style throughout the whole magazine as well as the double page spread. Features such as prize give away and web info have been added and I feel show conventional features.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The magazine represents all music lovers but targets the Hip-Hop culture. Everyone has different type of music they enjoy, weather it being indie, rock, club or R&B music is music. I have shown representation to a particular group by the Typography, as I stated earlier Hip-Hop magazines always use BIG Typography and always show features of other artists on the front cover. It also continues with images of artists in the contents page and Double Page spread and I feel the magazine will grab that particular audience’s eye.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I feel the Hip-Hop genre will distribute the magazine as I feel it has features just for that genre. For example if it was distributed by a rock or indie magazine, the target audience would not understand or know who the artist were. So being a Hip-Hop magazine it should be distributed by a Hip-Hop magazine institution.
Who would be the audience for your media product?

The target would be hip-hop fans and I would say pop fans too as many of the hip-hop artists now, do pop track or feature in a pop song. A good example of a Hip-Hop icon that features in pop songs would be Chris Brown. Artists like him can diverse in many genres as well as Rihanna; the target would also be an age from 16-25 and that is a good range age.
How did you attract/address your audience?

The magazine attracts the audience, with a good story mine being the album battle. Magazines only get attention when they have a good story, so having a gripping story it will attract the target audience. Also having a range age of 16-25 the younger ages would get board easily as many people do not read nowadays, so the story or interview has to be really exciting.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt how to use Photoshop, Indesign and High Quality Cameras in the making of my project. When I first began I struggled a lot with basic computer skills, but this portfolio has really given the boost to help me with my It skills.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

My work has become a lot more exciting to read, my knowledge as widened and my computer skills are very good. With the preliminary task I struggled with basic skills and my time effort was really poor, so practice and practice made me better and with the help of my other piers and teachers, I produced something of a high Standard to my preliminary task. What I would say that I continued doing on my main magazine, which I did on my preliminary was too much text everywhere, and it makes it look messy and hard for the audience to read. On a whole I am very pleased with the quality of my work, the time issue and my computing skills.

Candidates Rough Draft For Main Task

This is the candidates draft work and pictures used to make the magazine.

Front Page Idea 1
This was a god idea but i felt it was more pop than Hip-Hop.

Front Page Idea 2
I liked this idea and it inspired me from the help of the rolling stones front cover with Kanye West & 50 Cent.
it seemed to plain and the typography did not fit the hip-hop convention of a magazine.

Front Page Idea 3
This idea was really good, the way the lighting streak separated the two artist's symbolized they were up against each other, again though the typography was really small.

Front Page Idea 4
Same idea like the others, this time the typography is big and stands out more and the lightning streak is in the middle, the only problem is that it does not show any information about other artists like many Hip-Hop magazines do.

Front Page Final Idea
The final is much better, the typography is not to big you get a good feel of the magazine and it shows that its a hip-hop magazine by the typography, it shows a clear indication the two artists are up against each other, it shows features of other artists and there is a sub heading, like many other Hip-Hop magazines use.

Double Page Idea 1
The idea behind this is really though out, but seems too plain and there is a lot of dead space around, also it would be good for the logo to be consistent throughout

Contents Page Idea 2
The lightning streak again is a good feel, but the idea is too much and take a lot of time to create every single detail just for a contents page, and again it looks more like a double page spread.

Contents Page Idea 3
This idea was really good but it lacked the basic concept of a contents page.

Contents Page Idea 4
The idea of the typography getting smaller was a really good idea but again it lacked the basic understanding of a contents page. It was also to plain i did not show much change from the other idea.

Contents Page Final Idea
The Final Idea is really thought off, it consists of many good elements such as, use of Typography, layout, website details and has the same feel as the front cover. The idea of the artists battling is still continues and shows the faces split in half and attached together, like the film 'Face Off' so you can see they are fighting for the number one spot.

Double Page Spread Final Version
It shows good understanding of text wrapping, and good use of Photoshop. the use of puns is a really good element that the creator added and gives a clear indication they are up against each other.
Here are the three shots that were going to used, but never made it.

Draft 1 Front Cover (InDesign)
The typography feels to heavy and too hard for a magazine cover and very hard to read, though the idea is great it did not feel right.

Draft 2 Front Cover (InDesign)
The idea for this seems similar to the contents page idea, but the Typography is muck better and visible to read.

Draft 3 Front Cover (InDesign)
Again the Typography looks really good but the positioning needed to be adjusted.

Draft 1 Contents Page (InDesign)
The contents page looks very good, idea wise but it just looks to plain and looks untidy.

Draft 2 Contents Page (InDesign)
This looks like a basic contents page, it need text and many changes have to be made.

Draft 1 Double Page Spread (InDesign)
Everything look really good, based on the idea and concept, again though the color of the font does not fit with the others.

Draft 2 Double Page Spread (InDesign)
Again the idea is there but there is too much dead space at the top and must be filled with words.

Main Task Research

The candidate looked at many different magazine covers to give the candidate an idea for their own work. The genre the candidate looked at was the hip-hop theme.
Rolling Stone Idea, simple but this is what normal magazines do.

Hip Hop magazine with an artist in front and big sized typography. also consists of mast heading issue number and date.

This idea was the one used in the candidates work. its shows two artists going head to head for best album.

an explicit image for more of an adult approach for a music magazine

a 1980's magazine still consisting the same style we use today.

Contents Page, The style of the typography is used very well, the image of the artist is also used effectively.

Anothe contents page, very plain and it show an image of the front cover on the contents page, which is unique compared to many other music magazines.

The Double page spread shows big typography and the use of another artist. it consists of an interview of the artist under the big typography and the font is smaller so it can fit all the information in
This video shows codes ad conventions of a Hip-Hop lifestyle and this ties with the idea of the music magazine genre. Also the way they are dressesd in the video also shows simularity to the music magazine photo's of the two artits, were the two artits are wearing smart wear.

Main Task

For the main task, the candidate had to design a music magazine of their choice. The candidate decided to call the magazine Lyrics and used some ideas from the research they found.

School Magazine (Contents Page)

The candidate’s contents page had only one version to it, this reason being was time. The candidate struggled with time and the use of Photoshop, as it was all new and had little experience. A contents page was made of the designer’s best ability at that moment in time.
Final Version

School Magazine (Front Cover)

The preliminary task had to consist of a front cover and a contents page.  The candidate decided to go with the art genre and had taken photos of an art student. The candidate also played around with different fonts and styles till he got the right version.
